The Division of Community Health Sciences

The College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine comprises four Schools. Community Health Sciences (CHS) is a division of the School of Clinical Sciences and Community Health

Members of staff in the division engage in research, teaching, NHS service and consultancy. Divisions were created in 1998 as the main administrative layer within the University. Therefore the primary role of CHS and its Head is to fulfil University requirements and duties, in particular teaching. In addition CHS co-ordinates ongoing staffing strategy for teaching and research, and facilitates change.

TEACHING is organised at the CHS level
- Undergraduate
- Postgraduate Taught MSc
RESEARCH undertaken within CHS draws on expertise in several disciplinary areas, including epidemiology, statistics, sociology, social policy, psychology, anthropology, economics, geography, nursing and medicine. Research is undertaken in the main under the auspices of the Centre for Population Health Sciences.
A number of CHS staff are also closely involved in the work of the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships
NHS SERVICE is achieved primarily through the General Practice Section, which runs a general medical practice (Mackenzie Medical Centre, West Richmond Street). In addition numerous clinical and non-clinical members of staff hold honorary NHS contracts.
CONSULTANCY to government, the NHS and industry is undertaken by many staff.
RESEARCH & PROFESSIONAL TRAINING is an important activity for CHS, and is accomplished predominantly through an ongoing large multi-disciplinary postgraduate research student group - Postgraduate Research Degrees but also through training courses offered through CPHS.
